RN-to-MSN Guide
If you’re an RN without a BSN but you know you want to go all the way to a master’s degree, an RN-to-MSN bridge can take you there without necessarily requiring you to complete a separate BSN program first.

How these programs are structured
RN-to-MSN programs are built for RNs who entered through an ADN or diploma program and don’t hold a BSN. Schools handle the “missing” bachelor’s-level coursework in one of two main ways:
- Some programs award a BSN along the way as a formal milestone before continuing on to the master’s-level coursework.
- Others fold the bachelor’s-level content directly into the master’s curriculum, without issuing a separate BSN credential — you go from RN straight to MSN.
Which model a given program uses matters for your own career planning, so it’s worth asking directly during your research.
What it typically requires
An active, unencumbered RN license, and often a minimum amount of clinical work experience, along with any prerequisite coursework the program requires.
What comes after
Depending on the specialization you choose within the MSN — nurse practitioner, nurse educator, nursing administration, informatics, and others — you may need additional certification exams and state-level advanced practice licensure on top of the degree itself.
Who this path fits
RN-to-MSN bridges make the most sense if you’re already confident about wanting a graduate-level nursing career (like becoming a nurse practitioner or moving into nursing leadership or education) and would rather not spend time and tuition on a standalone BSN if the master’s program can absorb that coursework instead.
